About title page_edited.png

My practice begins where words fall silent, weaving emotion into visual details and inviting the viewer to feel before they understand. I’m excited by the different ways we can use colour, shape, line and motion to influence the viewer’s perception.

Starting out as a painter, my aspirations changed when introduced to illustration at Aberystwyth University; I love the structure of projects and how visual language can be transferrable in all areas of media. It was also the release of The Sea Beast and discovering the short film The Pearl Diver that further inspired me - their use of colour, and visual storytelling that didn’t require words.

My first book is about my dad, and his struggle finding purpose after losing himself in work. His recovery after quitting his job, connecting with like-minded people and getting out in nature is such an inspiration to me. With this book, I hope to reassure, give guidance and inspire the way my dad has.

For my second book, I looked towards myself and friends, and our shared struggles as artists: confidence, perfectionism and imposter syndrome in particular. Again, I hope to connect and reassure others through shared experiences.

My next project is more complex that previous, experimenting with worldbuilding and more fantastical elements. Adapting the myth of Medusa, my story begins with the raid of the monster's lair and her capture – but instead of her head being cut off, it’s her snakes. As they fall, they transform into golden weapons that possess the power to turn their viewer to stone. Through the centuries, they are used to conquer kingdoms - for greed and power - until they’re lost with time. Centuries later, a new rumor circulates, that he who possesses all weapons will claim Medusa’s immortality… This story follows two friends that set out to find these weapons, and the people that stumble into their adventure along the way.

Currently, I’m exploring new ways of working; starting with hand-drawn sketches, I’m scanning these in and starting the foundations of the composition in digital software: the values, shapes and basic colour. Reprinting this onto water colour paper, I’m working over the top with paint and pencil to achieve the desired texture. My goal is to use the advantages of both digital and traditional medium.

Expanding my work further, I am practicing animation; I think my work can be elevated if I can incorporate timing and movement, translating more context into a scene and build a greater atmosphere. For my newest project, I am working towards making a rough trailer to promote the book.
